Facts and Questions
Does a doula deliver babies?
No, doulas do not deliver babies. That role belongs to medical providers such as midwives or doctors.
Doulas provide non-medical support—which means we focus on your comfort, confidence, and emotional well-being during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. We offer guidance, advocacy, and physical support like breathing techniques, positioning, and massage to help you through the process—but we don’t perform clinical tasks or make medical decisions.
What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?
While doulas and midwives both play important roles in supporting pregnancy and birth, they serve very different purposes:
Doula:
-
Non-medical support professional
-
Provides emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum
-
Helps with birth planning, comfort techniques, advocacy, and postpartum adjustment
-
Does not perform medical procedures or deliver babies
Midwife:
-
Licensed medical professional
-
Provides clinical care during pregnancy, labor, and birth
-
Monitors fetal development, manages prenatal checkups, and delivers babies
-
May prescribe medications and offer postpartum medical care
Think of it this way: Your midwife ensures you and your baby are medically safe, while your doula ensures you feel emotionally supported, informed, and empowered throughout the journey.
Do you take health insurance plans?
At the moment, I am not accepting health insurance plans, but we anticipate this changing in the near future. We do offer support for payment and various payment options that can be discussed in the initial consultation.
When should I hire a doula?
Many families choose to hire a doula in the first or second trimester to build a relationship, receive continuous support during pregnancy, and prepare for birth and postpartum with confidence.
That said, it’s never too late—doulas can still provide meaningful support even if you’re close to your due date or already in labor (depending on availability).
Hiring a doula early gives you the full benefit of:
-
Prenatal education and emotional support
-
Help creating a personalized birth plan
-
Continuity of care and trust-building
-
Access to resources, referrals, and preparation tools
Whenever you're ready to feel more supported—that’s the right time to reach out.
What does full-spectrum doula mean?
A full-spectrum doula supports individuals and families through pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum, loss, and beyond—including reproductive transitions like abortion, surrogacy, and fertility. Our doulas serve people of all backgrounds with a trauma-informed, inclusive, and culturally competent approach.
What can I expect during a prenatal visit?
A prenatal visit with your doula is all about building trust, preparing for birth, and personalizing your care. Here’s what you can typically expect:
-
Birth Preferences & Planning: We’ll talk through your birth wishes, explore options, and begin crafting a birth plan that reflects your values and needs.
-
Comfort Techniques: I’ll introduce breathing strategies, relaxation tools, positioning, and comfort measures you can use in labor.
-
Partner Support Guidance: If you have a birth partner, I’ll help them feel confident and involved with hands-on tips and emotional support strategies.
-
Education & Empowerment: We’ll discuss stages of labor, signs of progression, and what to expect at your birthing location.
-
Emotional Check-In: This is also a time to talk through any fears or questions and ensure you feel heard, supported, and prepared.
You’ll leave the visit feeling informed, empowered, and grounded in the choices ahead.
Are doulas for natural births only?
Not at all! Doulas support all kinds of birth experiences—including medicated births, inductions, planned cesareans, VBACs, and home births. Our role is to provide emotional, physical, and informational support, no matter how or where you choose to give birth.
Whether you're planning an epidural or a water birth, giving birth in a hospital or at home, a doula helps you feel confident, informed, and empowered every step of the way.
Your birth, your way—with unwavering support.
Can I hire a doula for my surrogate?
Yes, you can—and it's a beautiful way to support both your surrogate and your growing family. Doulas provide emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, and that support can be customized for the unique dynamics of a surrogacy journey.
A doula can:
-
Support the surrogate during pregnancy and labor
-
Help the intended parents prepare emotionally and logistically
-
Facilitate communication and birth planning between both parties
-
Assist with postpartum care and newborn transition, if desired
Doulas honor all family structures and birth paths—including surrogacy—and are trained to support everyone involved with compassion and care.
